A Solid Start in Watercolor II is designed to help beginning watercolorists gain confidence in a sometimes frustrating but always rewarding medium.

DVD PREVIEW

Watercolor instructor Lynn Powers presents basic concepts, techniques and tips that help students build a strong foundation from which to grow and explore. The DVD includes five lessons, each of which addresses a specific watercolor technique and introduces a basic concept important to successful painting.

A Solid start in Watercolor Part 1 & 2 is a series of classes designed to help you gain confidence, to introduce you to the basic materials, techniques and concepts of watercolor. Each class has a specific goal. The demonstrations and assignments are to help you focus on one skill at a time.

This series is NOT about drawing, that's a huge discipline all its own. Instead, you will be provided reference materials along with line drawings you can trace to use as subjects for each class. That way you will be able to focus completely on the watercolor techniques.
These classes are best done in order, as they build one upon the next. This first introductory portion will cover the materials you will need. They will be discussed in greater depth later in the series.

Classes will have downloadable pdf files you can use as study guides and review of the materials.

DVD Review

by Susan Bourdet: for Part 2

"This well-thought-out series of videos will teach painters, both new and advanced, to think like artists.  We tend to look at things in a general way - to see basic forms and colors, and then mentally fill in the rest.  The resulting picture is a generalization.  If you look at an apple, you see the round shape you expect to see and you conclude that the color is red.  Lynn will teach you to look beyond and within the object - to see it as a less delineated shape with some edges defined and others indistinct.

She will show you how colors of objects leak into one another and reflect, so that the shape of that apple might merge here and there with its background and the color, beyond just being red, is enriched with the colors of its environment.  This way of seeing is then expanded to include an exciting way of mixing colors right on the  paper for maximum vibrancy.  Lynn makes this process very logical and approachable.  After watching this series, your process of both seeing and painting will become saturated with unexpected color and bouncing light.  I highly recommend it!"

Alice Tetamore - comments

Last fall the DVD A Solid Start in Watercolor by Lynn Powers was used to instruct a beginners in watercolor workshop at our Art Center in Brownsville which I facilitated.  The 6 students in the class were enthusiastic about the techniques and concepts that were presented.  Several said that they had taken other watercolor classes but none of those classes taught the strategies that were included in this video.  Also the sections for each painting were paced well.  As instructor I did an example of each the paintings for reference and also to anticipate issues the students might encounter.

Sincerely,   Alice Tetamore  Brownsville Art Center
