There are more ways to get gestural marks in your watercolor paintings than just a brush. (Although a brush is also a great strategy.) In this clip from her instructional video workshop, Flowing Florals: The Informed, Intuitive Approach, Robbie Laird shows you how to add gestural marks to your watercolor painting by using both the back of her brush and a plastic palette knife to scrape into the painting. These scrapes of various sizes create a groove and allow wet flowing paint to fill and darken inside. The same technique can be used to light areas as well.
