Virginia Cobb is well-known for her dynamic, abstract painting style. She constantly challenges herself and her students to keep the work fresh and stimulating. Her innovative and exciting view of the creative process and the work she produces have gained her recognition nationally and internationally. Cobb is the author of "Discovering the Inner Eye" about experimental watermedia painting. Her works have been featured in numerous books and publications and the instructional DVD, “Acrylic Abstract Painting: The Evolving Image” produced by Creative Catalyst Productions.
A recent Google search reveals over 1000 references to Virginia Cobb. Most of these are contained in the resumés of artists who have benefited from her guidance over the years – artists who proudly list her as a teacher along their artistic path.
In the 2008 DVD workshop Acrylic Abstract Painting: The Evolving Image, Virginia Cobb demonstrates her process as she creates three abstract paintings, selecting options that highlight different design elements. The video includes 105 minutes of instruction and demonstration and a 37 minute interview.
Virginia Cobb grew up in a family of artists and has been actively involved in art throughout her life.
“Virginia begins a painting impulsively, working with watercolor and acrylic, layering color and texture on her surface, scribbling and marking into her paint… insinuating symbols that may or may not survive to the finish… The design of the painting is imposed with deliberation... by connecting, overlaping or otherwise organizing the smaller pieces into large cohesive shapes.” (Excerpt from “Designsense”, a CD workshop created by Virginia Cobb and Polly Hammett.) Virginia likes to say “…Painting is a journey. It is the way I mark my path through life…”
Cobb was elected a member of the American Watercolor Society in 1976 and in 1978 was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design. She was awarded the Dolphin Fellowship in recognition of her artistic achievements in 1983.
Her art hangs in many collections and is shown in numerous invitational and one-artist exhibitions. She is a valued lecturer and juror, and shares her exciting creative process in classes and workshops taught throughout the United States as well as at her studio/residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her symposium “For the Sake of a Single Image” provides a uniquely different approach to creating abstract art.
Virginia has served on the juries of the major watercolor/watermedia exhibitions throughout the United States and travelled across the US and Canada teaching painting workshops. Among public collections that include her paintings are the National Academy of Design and the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe.
