Product Description

Craig Nelson uses his quick studies approach to develop a portrait of an in-studio model, in a logical manner, from a line drawing to a beautiful three dimensional portrait. Craig discusses and demonstrates: lighting; preparing the painting surface; developing a ghost drawing to a final drawing; color selections; blocking in skin tones and hair; subtle adjustments to achieve lifelike flesh; when not to refine your strokes; and delicate brush work for successful hair. Craig talks about all his decisions as he paints. You learn where to look for details and place touches of strong color and value that add energy to your portrait. Craig’s Quick Studies approach helps you gain confidence to paint larger, more refined portraits after many of the basic issues are resolved in the quick studies format.

Hi from downunder. Thought you would appreciate knowing that your DVD "Quick Studies: Oil painting from Life" by Craig Nelson has arrived here. I've just viewed it and am delighted with it. If you'd like a testimonial statement then I would be happy to provide it. The view "over the shoulder of the artist" is excellent as are the simultaneous images of model and palette. I assume his "Quick Studies" is available on DVD? While I am beyond the beginner stage it may be of value to complement his book. Again well done and thanks from "downunder".

I just wanted to let you know how thorougly pleased I am with your videos! I have all of Craig Nelson's videos and I have learned more from watching and listening to him than from all of the workshops combined that I have taken over the years. He is truly one of the rare instructors/artists who can teach as well as demonstrate. I am able to follow his thought processes as well as his brush strokes. He is just superb!

Absolutely the best money I've ever spent!!

I've been painting for many years, and currently study with a world reknowned portrait artist. Still, I must say I not only learned more in one hour from Nelson's video instruction than I have in week-long workshops, but also I thoroughly enjoyed the production. Beautifully done. I really appreciate how Craig articulates exactly what and why with every stroke of the brush. And his work is truly aspirational. He's fantastic. Thank you!
