If you’re ready to take your oil painting skills to the next level, this instructional DVD workshop with Bob Rohm will teach you how to take a more “painterly approach” to your compositions. Over the course of 1 studio and 2 plein air demonstrations, Rohm details his step-by-step process for developing compositional shapes through the color and value relationship, establishing the “extremes” and carefully placing the finishing touches that will make your painting come alive.
In the first lesson of this art instruction workshop, you’ll have the chance to join Rohm in the studio, where he will demonstrate how to create an oil painting using a photographic reference. Students will begin to discover what the painterly approach is and how objects can be defined by planes of color and value rather than by line.
The second lesson in this oil painting course takes place on location, and focuses on the challenges and pleasures of creating a green landscape. Students will benefit from Rohm’s advice about using a color wheel, and how to add color variety to an otherwise monochromatic green landscape. The third lesson on this art instruction DVD provides students with the oil painting techniques needed to create a gallery ready composition. This quick demonstration takes place outdoors and emphasizes the importance of capturing the essence of the scene without the thinking too much or trying too hard to create a literal representation. Throughout the course of this series, Rohm teaches students to identify abstract patterns, notice relationships between shapes, and how to create paintings that will evoke an emotional response. Rohm will help you focus your efforts on the abstract pattern rather than on actual objects and on relationships between shapes rather than on detail.
