Beginner and intermediate students that have been confused or discouraged by the selection and combination of color in the past will enjoy this discussion of color concepts by world class artist Stephen Quiller.
In this motivational workshop, Quiller emphasizes the importance of strengthening your flexibility and skill in using color. The lesson begins with an introduction to the “Quiller Color Wheel” and ways in which it can be used to create moods, invent color combinations, and improve the artist’s power to see color in new ways.
The lesson continues with a discussion of five different color schemes involving pure hues, neutrals, and semi-neutrals: monochromatic, complementary, analogous, split-complementary, and triad. Through a series of simply color study paintings, Quiller allows students to examine the way that cool and warm tones can be used interchangeably as dominate and subordinate forces. In this way, Quiller is able to explore different methods for attracting the viewer’s eye to certain elements and moving it through the entire painting. Students will learn how to utilize color to create mood, values, movement, dynamics, balance, and harmony in their work.
Quiller provides useful advice for artists who want to know how to limit and select their color palettes to achieve stunning effects.
