Many artists would love to have their only job be to create works of art, so that they could be in the studio or outside most of the time. It is the reason we chose this profession. It is what feeds our souls, but it isn't enough to feed our bank balances. The belief that "everything else" will take care of itself is a lovely fantasy. Like it or not, we are all part of the world that provides us with income.

 

Art World Reality #8: You Are in Charge of Everything About Your Career

It's true that your main job is to make your art. The reality is that creating art is only half the job. Your whole job is to make and to market your art. When you are in your studio or making art "plein air," your entire focus should be in your creative process.

Once you step outside of creating and into the business of art, you have other responsibilities. You are in charge of deciding how, when and where you want to exhibit and sell your work. Will you sell directly to collectors and/or in partnership with galleries, museums and licensors?

Take the time to consider all your options, so you can make informed choices and pursue the right path for your career.

Artist Real Job #8: You Are an Artist-Entrepreneur

An art business is still a business. Your art is a product. You make it, promote it, sell it, distribute it, and handle customer service.

As an entrepreneur, you have to keep records of every aspect of your business. At the very least, you have to keep inventory of your art, a mailing list (viewers, collectors, representatives and art professionals), income and expenses (to manage cash flow), and pay your taxes.

In the beginning you do most everything. Once you have the income, you can hire people to handle the business side for you. So comfort yourself that you are laying a solid foundation for your future.
